Michaelmas Fair – All Day Fun for All

September 27 @ 10:30 am - 4:30 pm

Please put in your diaries our wonderful Michaelmas Fair day at the end of September.

The Michaelmas Fayre originated in the Medieval times at the end and new beginning of the agricultural season (October to October) for hiring new workers. Borne out of the time after the Black Death, where labour was short, the fayre bought trade and a range of skilled craftsmen and labourers with their families from the surrounding districts, looking for the next years income. Linked also to the Christian calendar with the ‘Michaelmas Feast’ which celebrates St Michael the Archangel, on the 29th September. The Medieval Fayre celebrated the agricultural success of the year, with seasonal foods, plentiful ale, and music and performances.

The Hospital of St Cross within it’s beautiful setting, carries on this tradition; with our Michaelmas Fair being about good food, cheer, plant stalls, music, high quality local crafts, festivities and the popular old fashioned outdoor games in our Bowling Green. Also, this year we will have a beer tent and ice cream van…..! Something for everyone. A definite date for the end of Summer Diary!
