This August, we’re delighted to welcome Opera Anywhere to the Hospital of St Cross with an open-air performance of this timeless classic, offering the perfect opportunity to discover why Gilbert & Sullivan remain as popular today as ever.

Who were Gilbert & Sullivan?

The names W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan are inseparable in British theatre history.

Gilbert supplied the razor-sharp humour, clever characters and delightfully absurd stories, while Sullivan composed music that is instantly memorable—beautiful enough to stand alone, yet always serving the comedy unfolding on stage.

Together they created a string of comic operas that have entertained audiences for almost 150 years, including The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and, of course, H.M.S. Pinafore.

Their works are full of quick wit, catchy tunes and gentle satire that still feel remarkably fresh today.

So… what is H.M.S. Pinafore about?

Without giving too much away, H.M.S. Pinafore is a joyful comedy centred around love, ambition and mistaken expectations aboard a Royal Navy ship.

As relationships become increasingly complicated and social conventions are turned upside down, the story unfolds through humour, memorable music and a series of wonderfully comic misunderstandings.

Following our best-attended Michaelmas Fair yet, we’re delighted to announce that the Hospital of St Cross Michaelmas Fair returns on Saturday 26 September, from 10:30am until 4:30pm—and this year’s event promises even more to discover.

Step back into the Middle Ages

History comes vividly to life thanks to The Hounds of Morrigan, whose immersive medieval encampment will be at the heart of the celebrations.

Throughout the day they’ll present fascinating displays, demonstrations and re-enactments exploring the life of a medieval soldier. Discover authentic weapons and armour, hear stories from the period and experience the sights, sounds and skills of medieval life through engaging demonstrations suitable for all ages.

Whether you’re a lifelong history enthusiast or simply curious, it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience living history in surroundings that have witnessed nearly 900 years of it.

Music to fill the ancient grounds

Adding to the atmosphere will be Courtlye Musick, a four-piece ensemble performing beautiful medieval music throughout the day.

Alongside them, the ever-popular Rock Choir returns to entertain visitors with a lively programme, creating a wonderful blend of historic and contemporary performances across the site.

A feast worthy of the occasion

No fair is complete without fantastic food, and this year’s line-up is bigger than ever.

Alongside returning favourites, visitors can enjoy:
