If you’ve never been to an opera before, H.M.S. Pinafore is the perfect place to start.
For some, the word opera conjures images of grand theatres, elaborate costumes and performances that feel a little intimidating. But Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operas are something altogether different—warm, witty, wonderfully entertaining and packed with melodies that have delighted audiences for generations.
This August, we’re delighted to welcome Opera Anywhere to the Hospital of St Cross with an open-air performance of this timeless classic, offering the perfect opportunity to discover why Gilbert & Sullivan remain as popular today as ever.
Who were Gilbert & Sullivan?
The names W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan are inseparable in British theatre history.
Gilbert supplied the razor-sharp humour, clever characters and delightfully absurd stories, while Sullivan composed music that is instantly memorable—beautiful enough to stand alone, yet always serving the comedy unfolding on stage.
Together they created a string of comic operas that have entertained audiences for almost 150 years, including The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and, of course, H.M.S. Pinafore.
Their works are full of quick wit, catchy tunes and gentle satire that still feel remarkably fresh today.
So… what is H.M.S. Pinafore about?
Without giving too much away, H.M.S. Pinafore is a joyful comedy centred around love, ambition and mistaken expectations aboard a Royal Navy ship.
As relationships become increasingly complicated and social conventions are turned upside down, the story unfolds through humour, memorable music and a series of wonderfully comic misunderstandings.
At its heart, it’s a story about following your heart rather than simply following tradition—a theme that remains just as relatable today as when the opera first premiered.
Opera—but not as you might expect
If you’ve never experienced live opera, you may be surprised by just how accessible H.M.S. Pinafore is.
This isn’t an evening of solemn seriousness or complicated plots. It’s light-hearted, funny and full of personality, with songs that move the story along and characters who quickly win over the audience.
Performed by the acclaimed touring company Opera Anywhere, the production combines superb musicianship with engaging storytelling and plenty of humour, making it ideal for seasoned opera lovers and complete newcomers alike.
The perfect summer evening
Perhaps the greatest star of the evening is the setting itself.
Imagine arriving as the gardens are bathed in the soft light of a summer evening. Spread out your picnic, enjoy a drink from the outdoor bar and relax among nearly 900 years of history before the performance begins.
As twilight settles over the ancient walls of the Hospital of St Cross, the music starts—and one of Britain’s best-loved comic operas comes to life beneath the open sky.
It’s a wonderfully relaxed way to experience live performance and a memorable evening to share with family and friends.
